Family, Culture Wars, Global Christianity
on the Christian calendar, yet again
by Peggy Drinkard
The following excellent article expresses what my heart has hinted at but not formulated nearly as well on why the Christian calendar is important.
The other day a woman at a retail store complained that Christmas Day was the one and only day in the year their store was closed…not Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, or any other in the year. Such stories make me want to scream. Man was not made to work 24/7 7 days a week, despite what the worshippers of mammon conclude. We were made to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Work is a part of doing this, but certainly not all of it…hence a weekly Sabbath for rest, and special holidays as well. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.patheos.com%2Fblogs%2Fdavidhenson%2F2012%2F01%2Fthe-redemption-of-time-the-christian-calendar-as-civil-disobedience%2F&h=SAQGxDStM

Great article, Peggy, and much to ponder both privately and covenately. I was dismayed by the last few comments regarding the sacrements and especially the one that said the coffee hour was where "real church" happens. Real church happens in worship. Without the worship of God, there is no church, and whether the commenters care for historic Christianity or not, it has always been that way and will always be that way.
Regarding the Christian calendar, I am looking forward to Wednesday morning, February 22nd at Riverwood and the beautiful Ash Wednesday service.
