Presidential Views on Roe, or, Abort Your Way to Equality
by Clay Staggs
Roe v. Wade is turning 39 years old, so President Obama decided to comment. It was pretty much what you'd expect from a pro-choice Democrat, and you can read it all here. What is truly remarkable in the statement is this little gem here:
And as we remember this historic anniversary, we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.
Got that? Women having abortion is just a way to keep them equal with men. It's just those pesky babies that really just wrongly disadvantage women. I mean, if a woman has to have a baby, well, that clearly denies her opportunities and freedoms (!) that men have, since, you know, men don't have that bothersome uterus.
It is frequently lamented that the abortion debate is so divisive. I'd submit this quote as Exhibit A for why. I take Obama at his word that this is what he genuinely believes. I suppose to him children are just bumps on the road to some magical equality land that awaits women if they just abort their way there.
What is truly mind-boggling is how this supposedly intelligent, Ivy-league trained lawyer is so ignorant at understanding how his opponents will understand his words. Because he's either completely unable to conceive that, or he just doesn't care.
