Books
Outside My Genre
by Tim Lien
A couple years ago I read TIME magazine’s compilation of the best 100 English novels from 1923 to present. I remember seeing The Watchmen on the list, since it was the only graphic novel that made the list. A little surprising, since I normally associate graphic novels with Dick Tracy, Spidey, and Dilbert. Eighteen novels on the list tied for the top rating. The Watchmen is one of them…among Invisible Man, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, Blood Meridian, Clockwork Orange, Lolita, and Gone with the Wind.
Alert reader Lawrence Lavender is in the middle of giving it a read. He sent me an interesting quote from the book:
“God exists, and he’s American.”
He thought it was quite prescient of Alan Moore to write this critique in….1985.
I guess I might like it afterall.
