Calling All the Unqualified

by Tim Lien

The convergence of two things: Prince Caspian and Leadership

My mentor, Tom Kay, told me that almost every time he approached men about becoming a Deacon or Elder, they would say something to the effect of: “Whoa, now. Not me. I’m not Deacon/Elder material.” And he said that was one of the desirable prerequisites. He also said to be wary of the guy who thinks he ready for leadership. He would always add this little quote, as well.:

God does not call the qualified, he qualifies the called.

C.S. Lewis says pretty much the same thing, as well: (Thanks, Jake Collins)

“Welcome, Prince,” said Aslan. “Do you feel yourself sufficient to take up the Kingship of Narnia?” “I——I don’t think I do, Sir,” said Caspian. “I’m only a kid.” “Good,” said Aslan. “If you had felt yourself sufficient, it would have been a proof that you were not.
