Politics

Be Thankful…..

by Clay Staggs

That you don’t live in Iowa or New Hampshire or any of the other early voting states, or else you’d have to see drivel like this every time you flick on the TV:

This is just about the worst political commercial I’ve ever seen. Is this supposed to be part of her charm offensive? Should we be like small children, eager to get the goodies she’s promising? Like she’s the political version of Santa Claus? I guess it’s really nice to promise to give out gifts that will be paid for with other people’s money.

How unbelievably patronizing. No wonder her poll numbers are tanking.

It’s difficult for me to remember this is NOT a parody. It could almost be on SNL as is.

I agree with both you and Jeff about the condescending tone and the inanity of the commercial. I kind of disagree about effectiveness. I think this will be effective to a large degree. The famous cynic and atheist, H. L. Mencken, said a lot of things I vehemently disagree with, but one of his quotes is dead on accurate and I think will apply here. Mencken said, “Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.”

Jimmy,

Though experience often forces me to agree with Mencken’s quote, I’m going to differ with him for one reason here. Everyone who has given Christmas presents knows EXACTLY where the money for them has come from. Everyone also knows that those things HRC is promising will NOT come from her checkbook.
