Christian Chaff

Vulgar Sign Language

by Tim Lien

I feel like Dave Barry, when I say, “I’m not making this up.” Someone saw this church sign here in Tuscloosa, alerted me, and then sent me the photos. Here it is in all its glory:

I even feel I’m being too nice by pixelating the church name and the pastor’s name. This is excrement. This is anti-scriptural, anti-gospel, and anti-work-of-Christ…..and impossible. I told somebody that vulgarity spray-painted on a brick wall would have been less destructive than this nonsense. I will go take 10 deep breaths, now.

“For it is by grace you have been saved— through faith, and even your faith is not of yourselves— it is the gift of God, so that no one should boast.” Ephesians 2:8,9

I go by this church most days. They have some interesting quotes.
I’ve seen this one at another church in town a few months ago as well. Both times, my jaw dropped and I became rather nauseated. The baggage that this engenders is heavy & endless.

Sadly, in a lot of small churches such as this, someone from the congregation or board of deacons is given the job of keeping the sign fresh. Most of the phrases on signs are from pre-printed idea sheets or ‘idea books’ with no thought to either theological distinctives or accuracy.

The result is usually terrible. It only serves to aggravate other believers and give nonbelievers material to lampoon or about which to scratch their head.
