Education

Bulletproof Books?

by Clay Staggs

I know that everyone is concerned about school safety, but has it really come to this?

How bad can it get? How low can it go? Sad commentary on the state of education in today’s schools.

That’s a pitiful response but this is a much more vicious problem than danger in schools. Only yesterday a student accidentlly rear-ended another car after leaving the “Ying-Yang Twins” (whatever) rap concert at the University. The owner of the rear-ended car followed the student home and shot him dead in the street. This was # 7 for the week in our quiet little college town in the deep South. I’ve always called it the “Rambo” mentality, but we now are working on the 2nd or 3rd self absorbed generation who has been fed this in movies, video games, even in sports (see the Miami Hurricanes and the NBA as an entity) and most certainly in sports advertising. Look at me. Look how bad I can be! This is today’s “manhood”, and it’s going to get worse. The self absorbtion factor is sometimes beyond belief when observed from without, even in strangers on the street.

Read Marilynne Robinson’s essay, “Facing Reality,” from The Death of Adam. It speaks to the root causes of losing the humanism that was given as a gift by God.
